I have been approached by a group in dire need of additional volunteers for the upcoming Ironman event, Sunday, August 26th. This is one event you have to witness in person. The sheer determination and will power, not to mention the extreme level of fitness of these athletes is worth checking out. The volunteer position involves working as a pointer giving directions to the athletes on the bike or run course. The bike course shifts are from 7:30-12:30 and the run course shifts are from noon to midnight…. Any slot in between, normally they ask for four hours and serve a free meal.
The position involves: Standing at all turns on course to direct runners and bikers at turns and alert them to hazards or stop traffic: and to keep athletes on course (vocally & physically give directions), to keep them safe (if needed, become a traffic cop, the athletes always get the right of way, but the cars and/or pedestrians don’t always know that) and to keep them encouraged (every chance you get, cheer them on, especially towards the end of the pack).
• Tips & Tricks
If by yourself at an intersection or turn, position yourself BEFORE it, not IN it.
If with others at an intersection or turn, make sure someone is BEFORE it & IN it.
o BRING…
• Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, umbrella
• Wear appropriate shoes (standing on the side of the road, lots of standing & moving)
• Chair
• Small cooler with drinks & snacks (be prepared for extreme heat and DRINK LOTS OF H2O)
• Radio
o If an athlete needs medical attention, call 911
This particular group will have an organizational meeting Saturday before ironman. You will get your t-shirt then.
