In a time when choices for fitness are plenty, passion for the trade and consistency are often understated and over-looked. When I started in this industry almost 20 years ago, who would have predicted that you could one day pay $10/month for a gym membership, a ballet bar would start a fitness chain, or an underground high intensity concept would be sponsored by Reebok and have competitions on ESPN.
It is human nature to often seek out the latest and greatest trend, but the old adage of “If it’s sounds too good to be true, it probably is” still holds a strong presence in this industry. That is not to say that some of these concepts aren’t legit and good for the industry, but the large majority of these new ideas replace their lack of proven methodology and science with greed and desire to take advantage of human nature.
When I saw that we also won the Louisville A-List BEST GYM award in 2008 (2nd place in 2010) and realized that 8 of the top ten facilities in the contest back then are no longer in existence, the idea for this article came to light.
When making your fitness choice in an overly populated industry, please do your homework and give more credit to proven long-term success and less to the bright, shiny new concept on the market.
